Chris Shim, CPA, MST
Chris grew up in the bustling suburbs of metro Detroit, where he and his immediate family still live. He attended Michigan State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and received the prestigious Presidential Volunteer Service Award from the White House. He went on to complete his education by earning his Master of Science in Taxation degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI.
Although his first tax season was spent volunteering with VITA in 2015, Chris fully began his accounting career with a regional Detroit accounting firm in 2016. There he specialized in passthrough entities as well as the individual tax returns for the respective shareholders, partners, beneficiaries, and grantors across a myriad of industries. He went on to earn his Michigan CPA license in January of 2019. Chris then went on to join a regional Washington D.C. accounting firm at the end of 2020 where he was fully remote and specialized in passthrough entities and individual tax returns for tech companies and federal government contractors. Although those were both valuable experiences, Chris originally went into public accounting with the intention of serving as a trusted advisor so joining Opsahl Dawson’s Tax Forward team was an obvious choice to meet his career goals
In his free time, Chris enjoys spending time with his wife and son and their doxie-poo. They try to spend as much time as they can around the Great Lakes in beautiful Northern Michigan in the summer, but usually hunker down inside during the harsh Michigan winters.
